Homeowners insurance can be confusing.

Let's talk homeowner's insurance.

A standard homeowner's policy includes 4 types of coverage.
- Coverage for the structure of your home.
- Coverage for your personal belongings.
- Liability protection in case someone is injured on your property.
- Additional living expenses in the event you are temporarily unable to live in your home due to fire or other insured disaster.

When you are considering how much coverage you need, you need to consider that this will be the coverage that pays to repair or rebuild your home if it is damaged or destroyed by fire, hail, lightening or another peril covered by your policy so be sure to buy enough coverage to cover the expense of rebuilding your home.

Your standard homeowner's policy will not pay for damage caused by flood or routine wear and tear - and some policies include earthquake while others do not.

Most standard policies also cover structures detached from your home such as a garage, tool shed, or gazebo. Most often, these structures are covered for about 10% of the amount of the insurance on your home. So if you think you need more coverage on these items, talk to your agent.
