What disasters are covered by my homeowners or renters policy?

It is important to understand what perils, or disasters, are covered by your homeowners and renters policy. Most policies cover a wide range of potential disasters, but you need to check what specifically is covered in your policy.

The most common perils covered are:
* Fire/lightening
* Windstorm or hail
* Explosion
* Riot or civil commotion
* Damage caused by an aircraft
* Damage caused by a vehicle
* Smoke
* Vandalism or malicious mischief
* Theft
* Volcanic eruption

So, what is important to note is that several disasters are not covered in most basic policies. For example, water damage from floods OR overflow of your water heater, plumbing, or other household appliances are not included. Also, earthquakes are becoming more common in our area and they, most likely, are not included.

Don't panic, just make sure you have the appropriate coverage. There are options available to cover most disasters imaginable.
